In this edition of the Explore Oregon Podcast, Zach is joined by trail runner and ultramarathoner Ryan Ghelfi to talk about the art of fastpacking a combination of trail running and backpacking.
Ghelfi, owner of Ashland-based Wilderness Fastpacking, talks about how he dramatically reduces the weight of packs so people can cover far more ground quicker than with traditional backpacking.
In the second half of the podcast, Ryan and Zach pick their favorite wilderness spots within the mythic State of Jefferson otherwise known as Southern Oregon and extreme Northern California.
They talk about hidden gems around Mount Shasta, the Trinity Alps, Marble Mountains, Red Buttes, Kalmiopsis and Siskiyou. It s a land of extreme beauty, endless trails but with less people than many spots across Oregon.

After an exceptional 2020 season, the Siskiyou Mountain Club is hiring interns for their 2021 Wilderness Conservation Corps, an intensive summer program that includes 47 days of field work restoring the region’s most remote and spectacular backwoods trails. Field crews will be dispatched on 10-day projects in the Rogue-Umpqua Divide, Red Buttes, Siskiyou and Kalmiopsis federal wilderness areas. Crews camp out and live on the trail for that time. The work includes removing brush and debris, digging out buried trail tread and using old-fashioned crosscut saws to remove trees that have fallen on trails. Interns receive a $1,500 monthly educational stipend and are eligible for a bonus.
