What a wild few months it’s been. The New York Red Bulls fired a coach, hired a manager, saw the emergence of a young star, and experienced heaps of transfer drama. Sometimes I wonder if there is anything more fulfilling than following and writing about this club. Is there a greater, more fulfilling world out there, with interesting people and exciting adventures? I doubt it.

Sometimes the best course of action is to say nothing. It goes beyond the old adage “Silence is golden.” Not everything requires a comment or input. Information will reach the ears of others precisely when it is supposed to, and there is no need for you, me, or anybody to serve as a pack mule or town crier. Focus on yourself because people are going to like or dislike you regardless of what you do. Definitely don’t write a weekly post in the desperate hope of receiving validation.

The transfer window is always an interesting time for me. I see all of these players moving, changing their lives, doing something new. I look inward and wonder, “What am I doing with my life? Would I have the courage and wherewithal to pick up everything and move halfway across the world to a new location?” The answer is a resounding “no chance,” so perhaps followers of the sport should be a little kinder to those struggling to immediately adjust to an unfamiliar environment, one in which they are expected to succeed at a competitive and challenging task.

These days you can’t go anywhere without people talking about the New York Red Bulls. Just yesterday I was in the frozen foods section, perusing the latest crop of les pommes de terre frites, when I heard a woman discussing the club’s latest transfer rumors. I was stunned, floored, nearly dropping the bag of Ore-Ida Golden Crinkles that had taken three minutes of painstaking deliberation to select. Before I could turn to join in her conversation, she was gone, but the message is clear: like my cholesterol, American soccer is on the rise.

We’re halfway through January, which means we’re also 1/24th through the year. What have you accomplished with your time? Maybe you started a resolution or two? Did you pick up that book you’ve always been meaning to read? Don’t let time slip away, not like me, chained to this weekly blog post that takes up too much of my time and energy.
Here’s this week’s top story.
Colombian youth international
Andrés Reyes published a story on his personal Instagram account indicating that he is in Hanover, New Jersey. The picture - taken outside of a DICK’S Sporting Goods - may indicate something, but I’ll allow you to draw your own conclusions. Social media speculation can be so gauche, although there may be something to this one.
