The Green Issue: So You Want to Recycle Responsibly

Tweet Recycling sorting at River Hills Recycling CenterPhoto: Eric England A sound not unlike rain patters incessantly at the back of the open-air building where trucks dump material at Nashville’s River Hills Recycling Center. This is the largest recycling facility in Nashville, and that sound is a thunderstorm of sorts. It’s a steady stream of pill bottles, drink cans, cardboard boxes and other materials hurtling through a large machine called a drum feeder, which sends the items down a conveyor belt to be sorted. Although operations manager Dilan Vince says the drum feeder can handle about 20 tons of material per hour, not everything that ends up at the River Hills facility is recyclable. The project is a partnership among TVA, Silicon Ranch, and the Duck River Electric Membership Corp., an electric cooperative that has served the area since 1936.

Silicon Ranch mulls solar farm expansion near Memphis naval base

Electricity producer Silicon Ranch Corp. could add acres of solar panels near its solar power farm north of Memphis, funneling more energy into TVA’s grid as Facebook and other expanding companies ask for electricity made from renewable sources. Silicon Ranch would expand near its 420-acre Millington solar station, which opened in April 2019 as the largest solar farm in Tennessee. In recent weeks, the company has begun to pay for options to buy farmland at Millington to open way for more solar energy production, area landowners say. ‘‘We are seeking to invest more in the community,’’ said Matt Beasley, Silicon Ranch chief commercial officer, noting the Nashville-based firm has not made a final decision to proceed with the expansion project.
