MIT students Spencer Compton, Karna Morey, Tara Venkatadri, and Lily Zhang have been selected to receive a Barry Goldwater Scholarship for the 2021-22 academic year. Over 5,000 college students from across the United States were nominated for the scholarships, from which only 410 recipients were selected based on academic merit.
The Goldwater scholarships have been conferred since 1989 by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. These scholarships have supported undergraduates who go on to become leading scientists, engineers, and mathematicians in their respective fields. All of the 2021-22 Goldwater Scholars intend to obtain a doctorate in their area of research, including the four MIT recipients.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 19, 2021) The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that three Wildcats biology students Kayli Bolton, Zoe Hert and Carly Karrick have been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The UK students are among 410 students nationwide selected to receive the 2021-22 Goldwater Scholarship.
This year s Goldwater Scholars were selected based on academic merit from a field of 1,256 math, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of 438 of the nation s colleges and universities.
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by Congress to honor the former U.S. senator who served the nation for 30 years. The program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Here s a look at the two promising students, with bios provided by the University of Alabama:
Anna Stevenson is a Randall Research Scholar studying mechanical engineering from Tall Timbers, Maryland. Stevenson, a student in UA s Honors College, has worked under Drs. Joshua Bittle and Ajay Agrawal to characterize properties of biomass-based fuels and fuel blends for use in low-emissions, advanced compression ignition (diesel) engines. She plans on pursuing a doctorate in mechanical engineering with the goal of conducting research in sustainable alternative energy sources for low-emission vehicles, either with a national or governmental lab or in combination with teaching as a university professor. Outside of research, Stevenson is the Southeast Student Regional Chair of the American Society of Mechanical Engineer s International Student Section Enterprise Committee, a member of UA s chapter of Pi Tau Sigma, a mechanical engineering honor society, and volunteers as a local high schoo
