2021 Research Achievement Awards Brown University will award Research Achievement Awards to six faculty members as part of its annual program honoring extraordinary scholars for their research across a wide range of academic disciplines. “Brown researchers are accomplishing remarkable work in many fields, and with these awards we recognize the exceptional achievements and discoveries of six of them,” said Vice President for Research Jill Pipher, a professor of mathematics. “During this year of global pandemic, the creativity and resilience of Brown faculty members has been extraordinary. We greatly value their determination to advance important fundamental and translational research.” The consequential research that Brown faculty members conduct ensures the University’s ability to fulfill its academic mission and be an agent of meaningful change, Provost Richard M. Locke said.

Dawkins, professor of sociology, has made a long-lasting impact on the University community in the classroom, on faculty matters, and in the athletics space. Through various roles, which include director of the Africana Studies program and director of graduate studies in sociology, he has had opportunities to mentor students from myriad disciplines, working with underrepresented minority students and championing inclusion. Dawkins was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who attended a historically Black college, had majored in sociology, and was assassinated in 1968 during Dawkins’ sophomore year at Edward Waters College (a historically Black college).

Five from MIT elected to the National Academy of Sciences for 2021

Share The National Academy of Sciences has elected 120 new members and 30 international associates, including five professors from MIT Dan Freedman, Robert Griffin, Larry Guth, Stephen Morris, and Gigliola Staffilani in recognition of their “distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.” Current membership totals 2,461 active members and 511 international associates. Membership is one of the highest honors that a scientist can achieve. The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.
