MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - There have been some early signs that this will be a busy year on Mackinac Island, even before the new season officially kicked off at the beginning of May.
April ferry trips carried more weekend visitors than expected, and local residents seemed surprised to see vacationers exploring the island in the first few weeks of spring, before most restaurants and downtown shops had opened.
Along with these early tourists, recent weeks have seen a lot of hustle and bustle in the island’s downtown business district. Hotels, shops and other spots have all been putting the finishing touches on off-season renovations and construction projects.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI – Visitors to Mackinac Island know that dockporters are an early, familiar sight on any trip. This group of workers meets each ferry as it arrives at the docks. They expertly stack luggage, duffel bags and mounds of overstuffed backpacks onto their sturdy bikes and baskets. Then, powered by burning leg muscles and a good measure of finesse, they deftly navigate streets crowded with tourists and horse-drawn carriages to deliver guests’ belongings to their hotels – all in hopes of a generous tip.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - Last year as locals and tourists tried to follow social distancing guidelines on Mackinac Island, some of the most-flashed souvenirs were face masks with the Pink Pony logo. You couldn’t walk down Main Street without seeing them at every turn, their prancing-horse design a tribute to the island’s Chippewa Hotel and its signature Pink Pony bar and outdoor patio.
