Los Alamos Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kurt Steinhaus is retiring Saturday, May 28. He has been at the helm of the local schools for more than six years as part of a career that spans 45 years.
Dr. Steinhaus first began serving as a YMCA summer camp counselor in Los Alamos. Sufong (Mei-Li) Milonni recently donated a large ceramic piece to UNM-Los Alamos and it is now hanging in Building 5.
The piece is formed by the ceramic rendering of the Chinese characters that make up the poem “Remembrance of the Tale of the Red Cliff” by renowned poet Su Shi, also known as Su Dongpo, who lived and wrote during the Song Dynasty (960-1127). The year 2037 will mark the 1,000 year anniversary of his birth.
UNM-LA Student Danna Mayer-Llamas Named Coca Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar

Danna Mayer-Llamas, a student at The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) has been named a 2021 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship administered by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK).
Earlier this year, Mayer-Llamas was nominated to the New Mexico PTK All-State Academic Team. PTK is an international honor society that celebrates the academic achievements of students at 2-year schools and provides opportunities for students to grow as scholars and leaders. Students are nominated to the academic team by their college administrators.
Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership, and engagement in college and community service.
