14th April 2021
Celebrated Australian yachtsman Peter Warner has died aged 90
Celebrated Australian sailor Peter Warner, who won three won three Sydney Hobart Races in the 1960s, has died after his yacht capsized in rough seas off eastern Australia early yesterday (Tuesday 13 April).
The 17-year-old boy managed to swim to shore with Warner, who sadly died at the scene.
Peter Warner was aged 17 himself when he fled from his wealthy family who made their fortune in electronics manufacturing for a life on the high seas.
His adventures included winning line honours in three editions of the Sydney Hobart Race in the early 1960s with his yacht Astor and missing a fourth by only a minute.

In these long-lived times, a Silver Jubilee is not what it used to be in an era when Golden Jubilees, Centenaries, Tricentenaries and whatever you re having yourself are cascading around us in an almost continuous nostalgia-fest.
Nevertheless the healthy Quarter Century of the Afloat.ie Sailor of the Year contest deserves celebration, as it has evolved since its inception to give a true reflection of Irish sailing in all its historic and extraordinary variety. And it has done this by being based on monthly awards which – at an early stage – weren t found to be enough to truly reflect our sport s exceptional diversity, and so in some months the adjudicators have allocated two or even three awards.
18ft Skiffs back on Sydney Harbour this week by Frank Quealey 7 Jan 06:26 UTC 10 January 2021
The 18ft Skiff fleet will be back on Sydney Harbour this Sunday when the Australian 18 Footers League will conduct the 4th race (Race 5) of the 2020-2021 NSW Championship.
The championship was originally scheduled to finish this week with Race 5 of the series, before extreme wind conditions forced the postponement of Race 2 on November 29.
The re-sail of Race 2 will now be sailed on January 17 to complete the championship.
Despite the need to re-schedule, due to weather conditions and a local COVID-19 lockdown in parts of Sydney, the Australian 18 Footer League officials have managed to continue regular racing on Sydney Harbour and complete the planned race schedule.
