The state transportation department s plans to repair roads and bridges over the next six years includes at least $448 million of major work in the Peoria area.
On deck are multimillion-dollar improvements to the Cedar Street Bridge, a widening of U.S. Route 24 in Peoria and Fulton counties, and reconstruction of nearly 3 miles of Galena Road along the Illinois River through Peoria and Peoria Heights.
Pritzker said the six-year highway plan, which is updated annually, will be funded in part by the six-year Rebuild Illinois capital program. That $45 billion, six-year program was enacted through a package of bills passed by the General Assembly on a bipartisan basis in 2019 and signed into law by the Democratic governor.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker Wednesday joined representatives from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to announce $20.7 billion to be used to improve Illinois’ roads and bridges.
The construction projects will last over the next six years and will improve 2,779 miles of road and 7.9 million square feet of bridge deck.
The release of the more than $20 billion is made possible by Rebuild Illinois, a bipartisan capital plan.
“Rebuild Illinois is about investing for the future supporting this generation and the next, make sure we have good jobs and the roads to get there,” said Pritzker.
WASHINGTON In his new $2.25 trillion infrastructure and jobs proposal, President Joe Biden promises to fix the 10 most economically significant bridges in need of reconstruction and repair 10,000 additional smaller bridges.
But the American Jobs Plan doesn t identify which of the nation s 618,000 bridges would receive the work.
Instead, Biden s plan would create a competitive grant program for a state to make the case to the Department of Transportation that one of its large bridges is deserving of a reconstruction or replacement.
Think of it as a competition, of sorts, for states to showcase their most dilapidated or outdated bridges based on condition or inability to manage increasing traffic volumes.
