VANCOUVER Police and search and rescue crews are looking for an overdue hiker who they believe is missing in Garibaldi Provincial Park. Daniel Ring was dropped off at the Elfin Lakes trailhead in the park on July 7 and was planning to camp at Rampart Ponds, according to a news release from Squamish RCMP. Police said Ring failed to return to his pick-up site two days later, on July 9, prompting a search and rescue effort. Squamish Search and Rescue have been scouring the area since being notified of Ring s disappearance, police said, adding that RCMP Air Services are also searching for the missing man.
The 45-year-old Sea to Sky local was located about 45 minutes later, but had died, police said. Police believe a group of three were swept up in an initial avalanche. The trio was attempting to leave the area when a second avalanche occurred, which they were unable to avoid. Saturday’s death comes one day after a skier was killed and another injured after being caught in a size 3 slide in the Poop Chutes area off Blackcomb Glacier. A third skier suffered serious injuries in a second smaller avalanche that occurred earlier Friday afternoon in the Phalanx area close to the Spearhead Glacier. The individual was flown via air ambulance to a Lower Mainland hospital.

After two avalanche fatalities in two days, Whistler RCMP is warning skiers and snowboarders to stay out of the area’s unstable backcountry.
A snowboarder was killed in an avalanche near Brandywine Bowl around 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The RCMP say a group of three people were caught in the avalanche and one was reported missing.
