Wisconsin farm memoir 'Remembering Rosie' offers feminist perspective

TOWN OF LITTLE BLACK - Family farms of generations past made Wisconsin the Dairy State and the top cheese producer in the country. They also produced a crop of literary works which may be best classified as farm memoirs. Wisconsin authors who found their niche and fame in this literary landscape include Laura Ingalls Wilder, Jerry Apps and Michael Perry. The books often explore back-in-the-day farming story tropes. The joys of getting back-saving advances like electricity, tractors and washing machines. The stress of scraping by in crushing poverty. Having fortunes made or broken on the whims of weather or outside market forces. The stories are recognizable to anyone with a farming background, and they are often served on the page with bittersweet nostalgia and sentiment, a longing for those bygone times.

Scientists identify new gene involved in autism spectrum disorder

Credit: Photo taken by Brian Coats for UT Southwestern Medical Center DALLAS - Dec. 22, 2020 - UT Southwestern scientists have adapted a classic research technique called forward genetics to identify new genes involved in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In a study published this week in eLife, the researchers used this approach in mice to find one such gene called KDM5A. Approximately 1 in 54 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with ASD, a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes disrupted communication, difficulties with social skills, and repetitive behaviors. As a disease with a strong genetic component, it is hypothesized that thousands of genetic mutations may contribute to ASD. But to date, only about 30 percent of cases can be explained by known genetic mutations.
