Minerva scouts plan Flag Day retirement event The Alliance Review The event will be 6 p.m. June 14 at Veterans Park on Line Street in Minerva.  It is considered disrespectful to throw out old, torn, faded flags. Proper disposal should take place in a retirement ceremony, according to information on defense.gov, the website of the U.S. Department of Defense.  While the American Legion calls the event a  Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags, its centerpiece is the burning the symbol on a rack over a fire. From the ceremony:  “A Flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze, or a beautiful banner of finest silk. Its intrinsic value may be trifling or great; but its real value is beyond price, for it is a precious symbol of all that we and our comrades have worked for and lived for, and died for a free Nation of free men, true to the faith of the past, devoted to the ideals and practice of Justice, Freedom and Democracy.
