Outstanding students at St Mary’s Karonga Girls Secondary School under the stewardship of Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of the Diocese of Karonga were on Saturday awarded for their excellence in the 2020 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations results which outperformed all other secondary schools in the northern region, making it the best in the northern region. St Mary’s Karonga Girls Secondary, which only began with just Form 1 in 2016, has in the 2020 MSCE results surpassed such equally good and already established schools as Chaminade Secondary School of Karonga and Marymount Catholic Secondary School of Mzuzu, among others.

Alumni donate desks to Chaminade Secondary School

Former Chaminade Secondary School students from the Central Region Chapter have, as one way of easing problems the school is facing, donated 50 desks to the school. Chaminade Secondary School is one of the oldest Catholic national secondary schools in Malawi, opened in 1962 by Marianists Brothers and has since groomed many personalities some currently working in the public and private sector and some retired. Chaminande alumni making a donation After presenting the desks worth K3.7 million during the week, Chairperson of the chapter, Major General Chikunkha Soko from the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), said the alumni agreed to make the donation in order to replace some desks which had outlived their life span.

CHAKWERA BRINGS BACK QUOTA SYSTEM: North erupts in anger, demos on the card

There is an out cry from the people of the North who feel cheated by President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and his MCP government for bringing back quota system of selecting students to secondary schools after the DPP government abolished prior to elections in 2019. Chakwera in his manifesto promised the people of the north that once voted into power he will abolish quota system of selecting students to secondary schools and university. “I don’t want quota to end but I want it to be dead as well”, said Chakwera in his rhetoric whenever he visited northern region during campaign period.
