SAN ANTONIO If life truly starts as a blank canvas, then with each stroke of her brush, Joselyn Lozano has the power to choose her own path.
“I just love to paint. It’s like my little getaway,” said Joselyn.
The South San Antonio High School student said her passion for the arts started when she was a little girl and would doodle in her mom’s notebooks.
“I like being able to make something of your own,” said Joselyn. “It’s like my own creation.”

The popular marching band festival and competition held during Fiesta each year has been canceled.
The next time marching band students will be showcased among the Fiesta festivities could be as late as April 2022.
After the Battle of Flowers Association decided Monday to cancel its annual parade, the association announced Tuesday the band festival, which hosts more than 5,000 area high school students in a marching band competition and performance, would also be canceled this year.

The high school freshman had struggled with some anxiety before schools shut down abruptly in March, but in the isolation of the pandemic, cut off from daily interaction with friends and teachers at McCallum High School in Austin, the feelings snowballed.
âI feel stuck in this sort of in between age where Iâm old enough to see current events that Iâm able to understand their impact and have opinions on them, but Iâm unable to really do anything about it,â she said. âItâs a very discouraging feeling and it leaves me feeling pretty hopeless about the future, both my own and that of the world.â
