COVID cases have surged in Florida in the past few weeks amid a plateau of vaccination rates and the spread of the Delta variant.
Florida had 45,603 cases as of July 9, accounting for 1-in-5 new cases of COVID-19 nationwide.
However, Gov. Ron DeSantis is shrugging off the spike as a “seasonal” phenomenon (which public health experts say is not the case), and he has remained staunch in his opposition to mandating masks in schools despite the fact that children under 12 are not yet eligible to be vaccinated. He also says that he will not consider another lockdown for the state.

TAMPA, Fla. â Federal health officials say three states, Florida, Texas and Missouri, account for 40 percent of all COVID-19 cases nationwide.
For the second week in a row, Florida alone accounts for 1 in 5 of all cases nationwide, according to the White House COVID Response team.
In the meantime, medical experts are continuing to urge vaccinations as cases arise.
âI was afraid I was gonna get real sick from the vaccine. But I didnât,â said Virginia Lewis.
Lewis said she was on the fence about the COVID-19 vaccine. Now sheâs a few weeks since her second dose. She said seeing others sick, convincing from family and seeing how a neighbor handled the vaccine helped change her mind.
