Why the race for Mt Kenya kingpin will be tough and complex

THE STANDARD President Uhuru Kenyatta makes his remarks during a meeting with over 7000 leaders from Mt Kenya at Sagana State Lodge, Nyeri County to discuss the region s development as well as other pertinent national agenda including the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) - [Courtesy]. The race to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta in Mt Kenya region has been further complicated by last weekend’s entry of Senate Speaker Justin Muturi and photo hints of former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo mingling with the president. Muturi’s coronation at the Njuri Ncheke shrine in Meru appeared to have stirred mixed reactions with some local leaders coming out to reject the move.

Leaders leave nothing to chance as scramble for youth vote hots up

THE STANDARD Angel Mbuthia addresses the press after a consultative meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta at Sagana State Lodge, Nyeri County, yesterday. [Mose Sammy, Standard] Kenya’s leading politicians are burning the midnight oil in a bid to win the minds and souls of the youth, a critical mass in the country’s election campaigns. The charm offensive by politicians is coming at a time when millions of youths have been rendered jobless by a weakening economy and now have had to resort to various odd means to eke out a living. Riding on the disillusionment created by a depressed economy and a heavily indebted government which has failed to fulfill its campaign promise of creating millions of jobs, partly derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic, a number have drifted to the promised land of a wheelbarrow economy.

Kang'ata was right on BBI, says Murathe

THE STANDARD Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe. [File, Standard] A close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta now admits that Senate Majority Whip Irungu Kang’ata was right about the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) fortunes in Mt Kenya region. In a surprise move, Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe said although he disagreed with Kang’ata’s mode of delivering his message, what he (Kang’ata) said regarding the situation on the ground was the truth. Murathe strongly defended Kang’ata over his warning about BBI fortunes in Mt Kenya, saying it served as a wake-up call “for those concerned”. Senate Majority Whip Irungu Kang’ata. [File, Standard]

Uhuru faces Mt Kenya at Sagana to push for BBI

THE STANDARD President Uhuru Kenyatta arrives at Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri during a past meeting with leaders from the Mt Kenya region. [File] President Uhuru Kenyatta will once again this Saturday face his restless backyard of Mt Kenya when he addresses a convention of social and political leaders at the Sagana River State Lodge in Nyeri county. The convention, for which invites are already out, is being held in a familiar place where Kenyatta retreats to speak to his backyard when faced with a rebellion in his vote-rich home region. The area is seen to be growing weary of being left without a kingpin when the president retires in 2022.
