Though things look very different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Salvation Army is still distributing presents and items to families for Christmas.
In Salina, the army began distributing Thursday, with a system in place that got recipients their items in a quick and orderly way after a few weeks of preparation. I had Heartland Early Education . case workers volunteer for about three weeks to get that set up, said Roxanne Matous, office manager for Salina Salvation Army. They came in when they had their time, in between appointments and things like that.
Matous, who has been helping with Christmas distribution for 30 years, said the Heartland Education volunteers finished the set up of the distribution in the Corps Community Center gym on Tuesday.
The Salina Salvation Army was surprised to find another gold coin placed in one of its bell ringers kettles on Monday.
This was the second gold coin donated to the Salvation Army in less than a week. The coin is valued at about $1,860 and will go toward the Salina Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.
The coin is a 1-ounce gold South African Gold Krugerrand that features the 19th-century effigy of Paul Kruger, the first president of the South African Republic. The national emblem of modern South Africa, the Springbok antelope, is depicted on the reverse side of the coin.
