Is the COVID-19 virus on the way out? Is the U.S. government taking appropriate steps to eliminate this disease?
To even begin to answer these questions, the first fact to understand about the COVID-19 pandemic is that pandemics affect everyone in the world. All parts of today’s world are interconnected by the globalized economic supply chain. Only by eliminating the virus worldwide, as was done with smallpox 40 years ago, will everyone be safe from the disease, which has already killed 4 million people and disrupted the world economy.
Once COVID-19 spreads in any population anywhere in the world, variants of the virus will arise. Any dominant variant will eventually reenter those countries that have vaccinated their population. May Day, International Workers Day, was born in the U.S. out of the struggle for the eight-hour day in 1886. Workers, many of them socialists and anarchists who migrated from other countries, risked their lives. Some including the five Haymarket Martyrs executed by the state of Illinois Nov. 11, 1887 sacrificed their lives so all workers around the world could be treated with dignity, winning better working conditions, a livable wage and decent benefits.

Statement by New York Boricua Resistance ‘No International Working Women’s Day without trans women’
This statement was co-written by Alicia Rodriguez and Gabriela Malespin of New York Boricua Resistance and presented by Malespin during the March 13 webinar sponsored by New York City-based International Working Women’s Day Coalition.
The webinar was entitled “Women and gender-oppressed workers rise up: The real pandemic is capitalism. The cure is global solidarity and resistance.” Many speakers focused on building solidarity with the 5,800 Amazon workers almost one-half Black women, in Bessemer, Ala., organizing for a union.
