The day was established to recognize the contributions of women. Rebecca Johnson, who co-founded the local Women in Politics group, points out women are just over half the population. She doesn’t see that balance reflected in Parliament or Thunder Bay City Council. “So, we’re not where we need to be. And there’s a lot of reasons why women don’t run [for office], but at the same point in time we have to encourage more women to do that and also to be elected,” she says, adding she is pleased to see more women elected to other Councils in the Northwest.
