Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times Jussie Smollett’s defense team maintained the former “Empire” actor’s innocence Monday following a brief hearing on the infamous disorderly conduct case. Lawyer Nenye Uche said he, like many others, thought Smollett was guilty of staging a racist and homophobic attack against himself in 2019. But after reviewing evidence and hundreds of pages of documents, he told reporters he changed his mind. “It is absolutely clear to us that Mr. Smollett is absolutely categorically innocent,” Uche said surrounded by other members of Smollett’s defense team on the steps of the Leighton Criminal Courthouse. Special Prosecutor Dan Webb had argued that Uche should not represent the actor because he had spoken with the Osundairos before.

Court documents obtained by Fox News on Friday heard a judge say he would not remove one of Smollett’s lawyers from the matter despite the fact he believes the attorney did, in fact, speak with brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo, the two men the actor allegedly hired to help him carry out a staged racist and homophobic attack.
