‘A holistic approach’: Program aims to change stigma of ex-convicts applying for housing Karen Parks, Adam Poulisse
Finding affordable housing is tough enough, but it becomes even more stressful when you’ve spent time behind bars.
A new program that started in 2019 in Florida hopes to change that stigma.
Patrice Scott is the operations manager for Community Asset Preservation Corporation, a nonprofit organization that stabilizes communities through the acquisition and rehabilitation of quality affordable housing.
“We do a holistic approach, so we look at everything,” Scott said. “We are taking a look at employment history, tenant history and when it comes to criminal history, we do a full thorough background search in terms of charges, convictions, how long (ago) you committed that crime and any offense rehabilitation.””

Impact100 Essex, a collective giving circle of 100+ Essex County women, earlier this month hosted “On the Ground” a virtual panel that discussed inequities facing local nonprofits competing for funding. Members considered how changes in the grantmaking process could reduce the impact of privilege and the racial funding gap for local organizations.
Leaders from four Essex County nonprofits challenged assumptions and biases in philanthropy and grantmaking.
