Amethyst has been on her own since her mother kicked her out of her house at the age of 15. We’re not using her last name to protect her privacy. After graduating high school in 2019, she enrolled in Lane Community College in Eugene to study paramedicine.
Throughout high school and during part of her time in college she experienced housing and food insecurity.
“One, when you re having to pay for college by yourself, you re gonna lose a lot of money,” said Amethyst. “And then you have to pay for your housing, and then you have to pay for your food and you re not able to make a livable wage, because you know, you re still trying to pursue your education. Like it seems impossible.”

Andrea (âNANAâ) Lorraine Kent passed away December 30, 2020 at Bethany Silverlake in Everett Washington at the age of 69, due to a long battle with congestive heart failure. Andrea was born on April 11, 1951 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota to the late Andrew Courtland Kent and Lorrayne Irene Elizabeth Sackary (Kent).Â
Andrea is survived by her two children Melissa Grubbs and Michael Grubbs, her grandchildren Jessica (kultainen lapsi), Ryun, Preston (surfer boy) and Jaxyn and her 3 great grandchildren Lilly (Red), Elias, and Kaylin, her three brothers Richard, Timothy, and John (Tom), her two nieces Jennifer and Amity, her five nephews Chris, Robbie, Jack, Pat, and Andrew. And her two closest friends Anne Tillinghast and Jeani Bertsch, whom she adored.Â

Joanna Darcus was most recently a staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center where she did consumer protection litigation and was a member of the Student Loan Borrower Assistance Project, focusing on higher education finance issues facing low-income people and communities of color. Prior to that, Joanna was a supervising attorney at Community Legal Services of Philadelphia where she represented hundreds of low-income consumers sued by debt collectors or struggling with student loans.
