1970 tornado memorial honors and educates as new gateway to downtown Lubbock 1970 tornado memorial honors and educates as new gateway to downtown Lubbock By Kase Wilbanks | May 11, 2021 at 5:28 PM CDT - Updated May 11 at 6:59 PM LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Inside the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, a structure built in the aftermath of the May 11th, 1970 tornado, a ceremony was held Tuesday to dedicate the new Tornado Memorial. “It was a lot of work by a lot of people and we’re really proud of what came together,” Dan Williams, Chairman of the Tornado Memorial Gateway Committee said. That committee formed when the City of Lubbock designated four acres of land at Avenue Q and Glenna Goodacre Boulevard in April of 2017 for this project, a tribute to the 26 lives lost when the F5 tornado struck the heart of the city and to serve as a way to tell the story of heartache and resilience.

Slaton Harvey House unveils restored railroad caboose The Slaton Harvey House hosted a celebration to show off the recently restored interior of an early 1900s Caboose that will now be on display at the historic bed and breakfast, museum and venue in Slaton. Donors Billy Watson and Rand & Georgette McPherson, along with representatives from the Community Foundation of West Texas and others, were among attendees at the event Friday morning at the Harvey House at 400 Railroad Ave. The caboose had been used as an office at Watson Foods in Lubbock for many years, according to the Slaton Railroad Heritage Association.

Recognitions: Achievements and awards Fortenberry receives historical commission award The recent Texas Historical Commission’s Real Places 2021 virtual conference brought together hundreds of individuals and organizations dedicated to protecting and preserving Texas’ historic places and the stories they tell. During the conference, the agency honored worthy recipients for accomplishments and exemplary leadership in the preservation of Texas’ heritage. Sandy Fortenberry of the Lubbock County Historical Commission received the John Ben Shepperd County Historical Commission Leadership Award for her work as “manager, cheerleader, and collaborator” with her members to preserve the county’s history. Lubbock County has received a Distinguished Service Award during each year of her tenure.
