“It really affects the way that people see themselves and their own life.” 12 Mar 2021
On top of giving us a healthy high school romance we actually stan (Seth x Vivian), and inspiring all of us girls to take a stand against sexism and body shaming, Netflix’s
Moxie is reminding us that representation matters.

Moxie trailer
Moxie, the ragtag group of aspiring radical feminist teens that band together after reading Vivian’s secret zines, are made up of people from varied backgrounds.
There’s Vivian (Hadley Robinson), the daughter of a single parent; Lucy (Alycia Pacual-Peña), a Black outspoken rebel with a cause; Kiera (Sydney Park), an aspiring Black star athlete at school; Kaitlyn (Sabrina Haskett), a large-breasted girl who’s sent home from school for wearing a tank top; CJ (Josie Totah), a young transgirl; Meg (Emily Hopper), a girl who’s wheelchair-bound; and Claudia

Based on Jennifer Mathieu’s eponymous novel, the movie on Netflix does not go for broke, but has its heart in the right place
Vivian (Hadley Robinson) and her best friend Claudia (Lauren Tsai) are back at Rockport High in Oregon for the new term. Everything seems to be the same the obnoxious rankings, where all the girls in school are graded according to their physical attributes, are out and the incredibly popular captain of the football team Mitchell Wilson (Patrick Schwarzenegger) is being his casually-annoying self. Everything is same that is until new girl Lucy (Alycia Pascual-Peña) asks Vivian, “You know that annoying can be more than just annoying right?”

There was a lot of love and charity flying around on the set of Netflix’s new movie
Moxie. The Amy Poehler-directed movie has a whiz-bang cast of Gen Z up and comers, including Josie Totah, Anjelika Washington, and Sydney Park, who we talked to for the video above. The movie also boasted its own pre-COVID political action day, when producers invited local activist organizations onto set to talk up their causes, generating momentum and support from the cast and crew. It’s a move that fits with the vibe of the film, and one that inspired us to ask Totah, Washington, and Park what their own pet projects are. We also talked about what Totah learned about herself making the movie, Washington’s work with the ACLU, and Park’s “fuck shit up” song choice.
