Paromita Sen | | Published 09.05.21, 12:32 AM As the absolute defeat of the Left Front (LF) in the Bengal elections became clear on May 2, 63-year-old Tanmay Bhattacharya, sometime DYFI president, retired bank employee, former MLA from Dum Dum North and member of the district committee of the CPM, laid the blame at the feet of the state leadership on live television. The district committee has distanced itself from the views. Excerpts from a conversation with him: Q: What according to you is the reason for the LF not winning any seats in this election? A: This vote was a vote against Modi and the people did not have faith that the LF would be a viable alternative against him. The people gifted the captainship of this state’s fight against Modi to Mamata Banerjee. We can argue whether they are right or wrong but the truth is the people ha ....
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those killed in post-results violence in Bengal irrespective of their political loyalties, emphasising her government would practise the inclusive politics she has promised. The assistance is for victims from “every party, every community, every creed. any murder”, Mamata stressed at a news conference in Nabanna. She urged the BJP to come to terms with the Bengal mandate and “show some restraint”, blaming the party for most of the violence. “You know well that most of the violence took place by May 3, while the (Election Commission’s) model code of conduct was in force. During that time, when the Election Commission was in charge of the state’s law and order, 16 people were killed,” she said. ....

To be sure, not many (only 9%) in our survey this time described themselves as traditional Left-Congress voters. Many of Left-Congress loyalists, we suspect chose to describe themselves as unattached this time as many as two-fifths of all respondents said they were not a supporter of any particular party. However, among this pool of voters too the BJP could not make any massive gains, securing only 45% of their support. ....
The Election Commission on Monday cited the Covid surge to indefinitely postpone the already deferred elections to two Bengal seats, a decision that also makes any by-election unlikely in the near future and hangs a cloud over the timetable of Mamata Banerjee’s re-election to the Assembly. Elections had earlier been put off to May 16 in the Jangipur and Samserganj Assembly seats following the deaths of the two Sanyukta Morcha candidates there. On Monday, these were further postponed along with an Assembly by-election in Odisha. A by-election was also due in Khardah, whose Trinamul winner Kajal Sinha had died of Covid before the results were announced. It would have offered Mamata, defeated from Nandigram, an opportunity to be re-elected to the Assembly which she has to do within six months of taking oath as chief minister if she wants to retain the chair. ....
