When it comes to fast food outlets Preston became something of a market leader in May 1965 when the first overseas branch of Kentucky Fried Chicken opened at No. 92 Fishergate sharing a frontage with the Wimpy Bar that in time became the Popinere Cafe (pictured, inset)before KFC expanded into the neighbouring space.
Fishergate has always been a popular place for cafes and restaurants with the KFC’s famous neighbour the Brucciani café, a delightful place for coffee and ice cream since 1932. While another cafe destined to remain in the mind of Preston folk was the Kardomah, which was run by John Victor Christian for 40 years until his retirement in 1966.
