Grey-te choice as Pateman Saunters into Grand National Saunter Boy surging to victory at Pakenham. Picture: Racing Photos Comments
Spoiled for choice champion jumps jockey Steven Pateman will ride Saunter Boy in Sunday‘s $250,000 Grand National Hurdle (4200m) at Sandown Lakeside.
Joint record-holder Pateman, who won four on the bounce through 2011-14, is hoping to become the first jockey in history to win five Grand National Hurdles.
But recent wins aboard Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Saunter Boy‘s stablemates Wil John and Norway certainly complicated the decision.
Norway went from a Warrnambool maiden to winning the Brendan Drechsler Hurdle brilliantly at Pakenham, while the equally progressive Wil John remains undefeated in three starts over the fences.

The Leon and Troy Corstens stable anticipates a bright future for Predetermined following his first victory at the second attempt at Sandown Lakeside on Wednesday.
Predetermined ($4.20), a two-year-old colt by Headwater, led throughout under Jamie Kah in the $50,000 Ladbrokes Switch Handicap (1200m) for two-year-olds, winning by three-quarters of a length from Amegdul ($6).
Montana Flash ($2.30 favourite) failed to make any significant inroads from his settling position in the five-horse field to finish third, a further 2.25 lengths away. He s a nice horse going forward, said stable representative Dom Sutton.
Predetermined finished sixth in the $500,000 Inglis Banner (1000m) at The Valley on October 24 at his previous start.

Damian Lane requires one win from eight rides at Caulfield on Boxing Day to earn a slice of Melbourne racing history.
Lane s scintillating form in the saddle during December has resulted in 14 victories across Melbourne metropolitan meetings.
It equals the mark reached by Craig Williams in July 2016 when Williams withstood a challenge from Dwayne Dunn in the race for the 2015/16 Melbourne Jockeys Premiership.
While records available to Racing.com only date back to August 2007, it is unlikely another jockey has ridden more winners in a calendar month prior to that period given the proliferation of metropolitan racing in Melbourne in recent years.
