Virginia Briggs MinterEllison has appointed senior Sydney partner Virginia Briggs as its interim head after parting company with CEO Annette Kimmitt following a disagreement about the firm representing the country’s Attorney-General, Christian Porter, as a client. The controversy flared up last week when the Financial Review revealed that Kimmitt had sent an email to staff expressing disappointment about the firm accepting Porter as a client. The AG last week held a media conference to deny raping a 16-year-old girl when he was a student in 1988.
Rebecca Maslen-Stannage to join fellow countrywoman Freshfields Georgia Dawson at helm of top international firm Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has chosen Australian corporate lawyer Rebecca Maslen-Stannage as its first woman senior partner. She will succeed London-based James Palmer next May joining fellow Australian, newly elected Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer senior partner Georgia Dawson at the helm of a leading international law firm. Maslen-Stannage is no stranger to leadership roles at HSF having served as deputy senior partner from 2012-2019. As senior partner she will chair the partnership council for a four-year term as well as maintaining her practice, which has seen her act on signature deals including 2020’s merger between TPG Telecom and Vodafone-Hutchinson Australia.

Regional US firm celebrates long overdue milestone as litigation lawyer Rhonda Tobin takes on top job Robinson+Cole has elected trial lawyer Rhonda Tobin as its next managing partner, the first woman to the lead the firm in its 175-year history. Tobin – who has been at the firm for the past three decades – will replace the outgoing Stephen Goldman at the start of next month when his five-year tenure draws to a close. Tobin has served on the firm’s management committee for the past 12 years and as chair of the firm’s litigation business for a year longer than that, helping develop both the firm’s current strategic plan and its response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
