Conflictul armat între coloniştii americani şi soldaţii britanici a izbucnit în aprilie 1775, forţele americane luptând pentru drepturile americanilor de sub coroana britanică. Mişcarea pentru independenţa de coroana britanică s-a amplificat treptat în anul următor, astfel că delegaţii la Congresul Continental au abordat această chestiune.
La jumătatea lunii iunie 1776, un comitet format din cinci persoane, printre care şi Thomas Jefferson, John Adams şi Benjamin Franklin, a fost însărcinate cu redactarea unei declaraţii formale a intenţiilor coloniilor. Congresul a adoptat formal Declaraţia de Independenţă, redactată în mare parte de Thomas Jefferson, la Philadelphia în data de 4 iulie 1 ....
