The Daily Dispatch was a newspaper published in Richmond, Virginia. It is no longer in publication. Jonesborough was spelled in that way in 1857. “Inst.” Is an abbreviation meaning “in the same month” so Rev. Wiley died on July 20, 1857. July 27, 1893: The Comet published several news items from Sullivan County, including this quip: “Rain is needed here to sprout news if nothing else. It is scarce.” “J.B. McClellan says it is a mistake about a poultry ranch being established on his farm.” “It requires a good spring and spring houses to keep milk sweet and butter from these ‘swealtry’ days.” “Preston Wyatt, and his sister, Miss Maggie, were in jail this week, only for a short time, however, as they were the guests of their brother-in-law, Sheriff Abe McClellan.”

July 25, 1852: The New Orleans Weekly Delta reported, “The Jonesborough (Tenn.) Rail Road Journal relates the following as a specimen of the way they do things in Tennessee. ‘S. D. Adams has written a letter to Col. Roper, of Dandridge, Tennessee, notifying him that he will shortly publish his life, which will be illustrated with woodcuts, and will disgrace him and his children to the tenth generation.’ Col. Roper, in reply, says he will prove his calumnies to be false in every material part, and his reputation to be that of a common street liar, and further, that if he shall come in contact with him, he ‘will cowhide him in a manner commensurate with the spirit of his age. Cowhiding in accordance with the age is good!’”

Today In Johnson City History: July 19

July 19, 1867: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported, “The weather for the past two weeks has been hot and dry. Gardens parched up, and the corn blades are twisted into rolls. Every body (sic) complaining of the sweltering heat. A good rain would be gratefully received by all, and make thousands of bushels of corn in our valley.” The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way, as well as being spelled Jonesboro in 1867. July 19, 1888: The Comet penned these wise words, which we would do well to emulate over a century later: “Beware of pets that bite us.”
