CITES Secretariat welcomes the Political Declaration adopted at the United Nations General Assembly Special Session Against Corruption
From 2 to 4 June 2021, the United Nations General Assembly held a Special Session Against Corruption (UNGASS 2021), the first in its history to tackle this issue. The session provided an opportunity to galvanize the political will of governments and the international community in enhancing and progressing the fight against corruption.
With this Declaration, UN Member States recognized the seriousness of the problems and threats posed by corruption to the stability and security of societies, undermining their institutions and jeopardizing sustainable development and the rule of law. They pointed to the importance of international cooperation in preventing and addressing corruption, which is both a national and a transnational phenomenon that affects all societies. ....

Transparency and honest government are the lifeblood of democracy. Trust in democratic institutions depends on the integrity of public servants, who are expected to put the common good before their own interests and faithfully observe the law. When officials violate that duty, democracy is at risk.
No country is immune to corruption. As representatives of three important democratic societies the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom we recognize that corruption is an affront to our shared values, one that threatens the resiliency and cohesion of democratic governments around the globe and undermines the relationship between the state and its citizens. Dear Secretary Blinken:
We, the undersigned organizations, work to promote human rights, democracy, media freedom, environmental sustainability, and an end to corruption around the world. The protection of human rights defenders such as activists, lawyers, and journalists is critical to each of our missions [1]. We are deeply concerned by the unabated rise in reprisals against human rights defenders, both globally and within the United States, and the chilling effect that these attacks have on fundamental freedoms and civic space.
We would like to request the opportunity to begin a discussion with the incoming State Department political leadership on the role that the Biden Administration will play in protecting human rights defenders. ....
