FIFA president condemns breakaway European Super League

Gianni Infantino has condemned the “closed shop” European Super League and warned the clubs involved of the consequences.

“We can only strongly disapprove of a Super League which is a closed shop, a breakaway from current institutions,” Infantino, head of world football s Zurich-based governing body, said in a speech to UEFA s congress in Montreux, Switzerland, on Tuesday.
The Swiss made the statement after 12 of Europe s top clubs – including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool and Juventus – announced the new elite league on Monday.
East Lyme Five years ago, Ann Dagle dropped off some money at The Shack and Flanders Donut & Bake Shop with notes saying to please use the money to pay it forward with free meals in honor of her late son, Brian, on his birthday.
She had been struggling with what to do on that day, when she thought to herself, What would Brian be doing? She said he d probably be at The Shack having his favorite breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes and corned beef hash, which he used to have before lacrosse or football, or having donuts at Flanders.
The idea took off, with people also contributing to pay for other people s meals, and the pay it forward event became a tradition on Brian s birthday, which is April 2.
Mystic A local grassroots group, whose 117 members meet quarterly to pool their $100 contributions, has now awarded almost $200,000 to area organizations.
Power of Together 2, which formed in 2016 as an offshoot of a similar East-Lyme based group, made its latest donation $10,700 to FRESH New London last Friday.
Gae Melford, one of the group s organizers and co-founders, said that while people may donate $50 or $100 on their own to a local organization, they can have a larger impact if they pool their donations. It s exciting that you can raise $11,000 in an hour, she said, referring to the length of the group s quarterly meetings, which have been held virtually since last spring.
Groton Samantha Clark of Ashaway, R.I., and Wendy Rein and Lisa Kideckel of Mystic were taking advantage of the warm weather Tuesday to spend time knitting at Esker Point Beach.
The women are part of a knitting group at Driftwood Yarns in Groton, but since the COVID-19 pandemic started last year, they have not been able to meet inside the shop. Early on, the group originally had 12 to 16 members but quickly dropped to a smaller number for their weekly gathering outside the shop.
When the weather turned cold, they were down to four members and moved indoors, alternating between Kideckel s and another member s heated garages. The garages were large enough that members could socially distance and they have been very cautious.
