A Johnson City business owner was arrested this week on tax evasion charges and theft.
The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to the indictment and arrest of Amy Oaks Turner on charges of tax evasion and theft of property.
A Washington County grand jury indicted Turner on one felony count of theft of property over $60,000, 51 felony counts of filing false sales tax returns, and one felony count of tax evasion. The indictments allege Turner willfully attempted to evade sales tax by filing false sales tax returns for Charleyâs Philly Steaks from January 2015 through March 2019. Bond was set at $50,000.
Main Street Pizza Company is one of about 1,160 businesses in Tennessee that benefited from a $28.6 billion federal program called the Restaurant Revitalization Fund.
The company, which received roughly $1.4 million, is still operating at a loss, but owner Jamie Dove feels better knowing his business now has a stronger safety net. The funding Main Street Pizza Company secured represents almost a yearâs worth of payroll for the business, he said.
âItâs just game-changing,â said Dove, who was in a priority group for funding because he is a veteran. âItâs the difference between us really having been set back like a decade . or basically almost being back to even.â
