Yesterday the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club (Milk Club) held a Martin Luther King Jr. Day tribute at Castro s Bank of America (501 Castro St.), commonly referred to as Hibernia Beach, honoring the civil rights icon and the passing of recent community members. The event was in response to Bank of America s installation of signs three days earlier announcing it would no longer allow impromptu memorials or tributes to be posted on the corner of the building, as it had been used for decades.

A San Francisco supervisor is open to landmarking the Bank of America building in the Castro after the financial giant initially posted signs that appeared to ban impromptu memorials. A group of LGBTQ community members reclaimed the memorial space at the intersection of Castro and 18th streets January 18 Martin Luther King Jr. Day and posted memorials of recently-deceased Black LGBTQ leaders after the bank removed the signs. The office of gay District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman indicated that he would propose the city landmark the historic site if community members raise their voices in support. Gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) said that he spoke with Bank of America officials to resolve the situation in hopes another community group may take over stewardship of the area.

One bank branch was scheduled to reopen Wednesday in the city of Napa with others to follow next week, a spokesperson said later in the day. A directory on the Bank of America website listed two branches in Napa, as well as the outlets in American Canyon and St. Helena, as “temporarily closed” and referred account holders to the bank’s online services. Calls to the outlets on First and Trancas streets in Napa went to voicemail announcements confirming the closures.
