Ramana here on Tuesday. Addressing presspersons, Mr. Ramana said that the absence of better connectivity with other parts of the State has hampered the growth of the port. Though the port has set a target of handling 68 million tonnes of cargo per annum, it has been handling just above 20 million tonnes of cargo. The trust has been raising the issue of improving road connectivity in its meetings with the Union and State governments.

(file photo) MANGALURU: The traffic performance of New Mangalore Port (NMP) is expected to increase considerably through the implementation of 33 national highway projects that Union minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched recently, said NMP Trust chairman Venkata Ramana Akkaraju. He said the port will be able to handle at least 77 million metric tons (MMT) of cargo by 2030 once the national highway projects are completed. While there was a target of handling 68 MMT of cargo in the current fiscal year, the port handled 25.53 MMT till November, as against 27.23 MMT for the same period in the previous year.
