Belly Up owner wins permit for Restaurant Row project

Encinitas    A proposal to combine two ocean-view buildings along south Cardiff’s Restaurant Row and create one super-sized facility with space for multiple wedding receptions has won its first set of permit approvals. The Encinitas Planning Commission voted 3-1, with Commission Chairman Glenn O’Grady opposed and Commissioner Al Apuzzo absent, to grant the project a design review permit and a minor-use permit. Next, it’s on to the state Coastal Commission. Pacific Coast Grill owner Stephen Goldberg, who is one of the managing partners of the Belly Up music venue in Solana Beach, is proposing to knock out the walls between his restaurant and the now-closed Beach House Restaurant and merge the two L-shaped facilities, creating one 9,388-square-foot building.

Cardiff Elementary gets commission s backing for first phase of renovation

Print Plans to demolish aging Cardiff Elementary School classrooms and rebuild much of the campus can move forward despite a legal battle over a school parkland area, the Encinitas Planning Commission has decided. The vote Thursday, April 18, to support the school district’s coastal development permit request was 3-0, with Commissioner Bruce Ehlers absent and Commissioner Brett Farrow recusing himself because he lives near the Montgomery Avenue school site. Commission approval can be appealed to the City Council, and the permit also needs state Coastal Commission approval. Plans call for the demolition of five one-story buildings and three relocatable classroom structures; construction of 10 buildings, including a multipurpose auditorium; realignment of the parking lot; the addition of perimeter fencing around the site; and reconstruction of the playing fields and playground equipment.
