(Screengrab from KIRO 7 TV) In April, a University District punk rock bar called the Kraken Bar & Lounge announced that it would be suing Seattle’s new NHL franchise, after the team had announced the opening of the similarly-named Kraken Bar & Grill in Northgate. While the team has since agreed to rename its restaurant, the bar is still looking to move forward with its lawsuit. The Kraken Bar & Lounge opened in 2011, priding itself as a neighborhood dive bar and a local destination for punk music. But ever since Seattle’s new NHL team unveiled its team name, the bar has struggled to maintain that identity, even before the Northgate restaurant was announced.

Kraken Hockey Team in Washington Sued by Punk Bar for Name April 28, 2021 A Seattle, Wash., punk rock bar is suing the city’s new NHL hockey team for $3.5 million, saying the Kraken’s choice of a name and plans to open a restaurant are harming the Kraken Bar & Lounge, which opened a decade before the team’s upcoming inaugural season. The Seattle Times reports the bar filed a lawsuit in King County Superior Court. The Kraken Bar & Lounge was founded in 2011 by William Knupp and husband-and-wife Kat Colley and Daniel Colley. The lawsuit asks that the team be prohibited from using “The Seattle Kraken” name and any others similarly confusing with its own trademarks. It states that the team’s announcement of the coming practice facility restaurant run “is sure to ruin The Kraken Bar and its near decade-old, cherished image and reputation as one of Seattle’s last dive bars.”
