Austin-Travis County businesses prepare for Stage 4

Austin-Travis County businesses prepare for Stage 4 Businesses prepare for Stage 4 of COVID-19 protocols For local health officials, the increase in cases linked to the highly contagious Delta variant is expected to mean an increase in COVID-19 protocols. AUSTIN, Texas - At first glance, it was a typical summer day in Austin, but the buzz about town was not all fun and games.  A spike in COVID-19 cases was growing and even for the average person, it was something hard to ignore. Actually my sister who is in Arkansas has COVID right now, her and her husband, so I think that was a huge wake up call, even if you do get more lax on the mask, just seeing the cases rise it makes you a lot more cautious, said Kathleen Shaw.

Jacksonville foundation provides relief to nonprofits amid pandemic

The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida distributed $1.2 million in grants to 117 area nonprofits to help offset pandemic-related costs. The one-time grants, which ranged from $500 to $50,000, helped cover purchases of personal protective equipment, plexiglass and similar materials, COVID-19 training and health testing of staff, items necessary for social distancing and sanitation and expenses incurred shifting to online services, according to the foundation. These nonprofit organizations, many with limited budgets before the pandemic, suddenly were faced with overwhelming, unplanned costs that were essential to continuing to serve their clients,  said Kathleen Shaw, vice president of programs at the foundation. We saw them make the anguishing decisions to ensure a safe environment for staff and clients, and we know these grants will help ease some of the financial burden that the pandemic created.

Carpenter s Place memorializes 24 homeless men and women who died this year

ROCKFORD People who are homeless are easily overlooked. On Monday night, however, the community paused to remember that the lives of the homeless are worth of remembrance. Nearly 30 people gathered at Davis Park on Monday evening to remember 24 homeless people who died in 2020. The gathering was organized the Carpenter s Place, a faith-based organization that provides resources that help  homeless men and women rebuild their lives.  The people remembered by Carpenter s Place likely would not have received any funeral or memorial service otherwise. For the Rev. Rebecca White Newgren, pastor of Rockford s SecondFirst Church, the service was as a reminder of the importance of all human life, regardless of a person s living circumstances.
