Consult with Indigenous Peoples before Making Decisions That Affect Them, Speaker Tells States, as Permanent Forum Continues Session
Indigenous peoples - guardians of nature - must be consulted before States greenlight development projects, members of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues stressed today, as the body concluded a discussion on its six mandate areas - economic and social development, culture, environment, education, health and human rights.
Phoolman Chaudhary (Nepal) highlighted the need for States to consult with indigenous peoples before making decisions, especially on development projects that affect them. He called for greater attention to the issue of indigenous languages disappearing and urged States to remove hazardous chemicals from indigenous lands.
Khmer Krom: Activist arrested for distributing UN declaration on indigenous people
The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) is calling on the international community to condemn the authorities responsible for the arrest and detention of a Khmer Krom human rights defender whose home was raided, and who was arrested and detained, for the possession and dissemination of information related to the United Nations Declaration on the RIghts of Indigenous Peoples. The government of Vietnam refuses to recognize the existance of indigenous communities, such as the Khmer Krom. While the actions were carried out by authorities in southern Vietnam’s Dong Nai province, they represent the latest in a series of actions by the government of Vietnam to repress those seeking the protection of human rights of the Khmer Krom people.
Reprisals threaten UN Charter
The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) has told the United Nations that threats to participation at and cooperation with the United Nations that minority and indigenous communities are presently facing, represent not only matters of individual concern, but also raise concern about whether the United Nations itself will be able to achieve its responsibilities under Article 1 of the UN Charter to respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace. ”
In a submission to the United Nations Reprisals Office, the unit within the UN s human rights infrastructure that deals with instances where UN Member States have targeted or threatened human rights defenders for their work with the United Nations, the UNPO provided information to inform an upcoming UN Secretary General report on reprials.
