Austinites for Progressive Reform – a PAC made up of political insiders and entrepreneurs fighting to give the mayor supreme authority – gathered more than 24,000 signatures. Those signatures were submitted Jan. 11, and on Tuesday the city clerk issued a certificate of approval indicating at least 20,000 of them were from registered voters – the minimum total the city requires for charter amendments to be placed on a ballot.

SHEPHERDSTOWN Ninety-two years ago this Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr. was born. His assassination at the age of 39, in Memphis, Tenn., may have ended his work as a civil rights leader, but it did not prevent his legacy from continuing to change the face of the United States.
That unshakeable legacy led to the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a federal holiday by Pres. Ronald Reagan in 1983. While in years past, the holiday has been celebrated with festivals and parades across the country, the COVID-19 Pandemic forced this year’s event planners to alter the annual celebrations, in consideration of social distancing guidelines.

Canon John Nurser, who has died aged 91, exercised a useful ministry in which intellectual and pastoral skills were generally combined. He will, however, be best remembered for his involvement in an extraordinary conflict within the leadership of Lincoln Cathedral. This became a national scandal and proved to be one of the most unhappy periods in the long history of one of Western Europe’s most beautiful buildings.
