In 2017, The New York Times published a feature on The Athletic, a newish sports news organization hellbent on becoming “the local sports page for every city in the country.” During the interview, co-founder Alex Mather acknowledged a strategy of poaching sports writers from local papers. He was … less than apologetic.
“We will wait every local paper out and let them continuously bleed until we are the last ones standing,” Mather said. “We will suck them dry of their best talent at every moment. We will make business extremely difficult for them.”
Four years later, is the business of local news extremely difficult? Yes. Will The Athletic be the last ones standing? Probably not, according to a report in Axios.

A Michigan native is set to appear on Jeopardy, becoming the first contestant from our state to compete on the game show during Ken Jennings reign as interim host.
Gautham Nagesh is a native of Jackson, Michigan, and will appear on tonight s installment of the show, Jennings fifth as guest host since Alex Trebek s tragic death in November. Jeopardy airs locally at 7 pm on WNEM TV-5.
Nagesh, who now lives in East Hollywood, California, tells M-Live that his appearance on Jeopardy was fraught with false starts. He got the initial call to appear on the show when he was visiting his parents in Michigan.

He’s the first person from Michigan to play the game of questions and answers in 2021. Jackson native Gautham Nagesh is also one of the first people to be a “Jeopardy” contestant with Ken Jennings as interim host following the tragic death of Alex Trebek.
Nagesh will try to dethrone the current “Jeopardy” champion on today’s episode airing on Friday, January 15.
