UNION COUNTY â The poll results surprised La Grande High School Principal Brett Baxter.
The school surveyed seniors about what type of graduation ceremony they would like. The vast majority indicated they wanted a traditional one in their gym, Baxter said.
The studentsâ wishes will be granted June 5 at at 10 a.m. when a traditional graduation ceremony will start in the LHS gym. The commencement ceremony will be possible because of Union Countyâs falling COVID-19 infection rates, which now has the county in the lower risk category, meaning small crowds can gather indoors.
Holding a commencement ceremony a year ago in a gym was off limits. Union County had a higher infection rate and like other counties was operating under more stringent state COVID-19 safety restrictions. COVE â Two men, both optimistic about the Cove School Districtâs future, are vying for an opportunity to help guide the school district the next four years.
Chris Thew, an athletic trainer, is challenging incumbent Andy Lindsey, a civil engineer, in a race for Position 1 on the Cove School Board. This is the only contested school board race this year in the Cove School District.
Lindsey, who works for Anderson Perry & Associates Inc., is completing his fifth year on the school board. He said he decided to seek reelection because he wants to help the school district keep moving in the right direction.
During a nearly hourlong address Monday at Cove Highâs Lea Ledger Auditorium, Copperas Cove Independent School District Superintendent Joe Burns gave an update on the happenings of the district during the 2020-2021 school year.
Many of the points Burns emphasized fell under the teaching and learning theme, including the district beginning to offer training for all pre-K, kindergarten and first grade teachers in the science of reading.
âMany of you will probably ask, âWell, why is that important? Teachers have teaching certificates, wouldnât they already know that?ââ Burns said. âIâd share with you that more than half of all people entering the education field now are entering that field under alternative certification requirements, and they may not have had that very sound instruction in teaching reading, even at the early elementary grade levels.â
With perfect conditions for a car wash last Saturday â 76 degrees and sunny â Project Graduation, a program that is put on by graduating students and volunteers of Copperas Cove High School, held a fundraiser car wash, raising around $1,200.
The goal of the fundraiser is to give seniors a safe and fun environment after graduation where seniors can be together and do activities.
The project is actually a gift to students from the Copperas Cove community. This program is a self-supporting nonprofit, which is sponsored by the Project Graduation committee, and it does not receive any funding from the budget of Copperas Cove High School.
