(WKBW) â The Gowanda Correctional Facility has closed its doors. Tuesday was its last day operating, after Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in December the facility would be shutting down. The closure takes more than 600 jobs from the Gowanda area, and shifts positions to other correctional facilities across the state. The Governor s Office cited financial reasons and declining prison population for the closure. The DOCCS says since 2011, the prison population in the state of New York has declined by 45%. There are now 31,419 people in the system state-wide. ....
Wikipedia Anthony Annucci, acting commissioner of the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, stopped short of putting a number on how many state prisons might be mothballed under the governor s downsizing plan. But he argued more closures are warranted, after the prison system shed more than 11,000 inmates since January 2020, leaving fewer than 33,200 inmates in 52 facilities spread across the state. A Cuomo administration representative revealed plans Wednesday to shutter additional state prisons by early 2023. As the result of budget decisions made by Gov.
