The owners of the former Colby School have received a permit from Summit County to open a bed-and-breakfast, which, barring an appeal, ends a multiyear, multi–lawsuit fight regarding the Victorian-style mansion that has been empty for years.
The site has been used as a hotel and a school in the past, but the county has recently and repeatedly denied the owners’ applications for commercial uses, and the main building has been empty since 2008, according to a report from county staffers

The 5-acre site is across S.R. 224 from the Canyons Village base area and includes three outbuildings and the Victorian mansion.
Hoffvest LLC, which owns the former Colby School site, is planning to use the Victorian-style mansion as an eight-room bed-and-breakfast. A judge recently overturned the county’s decision to bar that use. The land is just across S.R. 224 from the entrance to the Canyons Village base area of Park City Mountain Resort.

A 3rd District Court judge has overturned a Summit County Council land-use decision, ruling that the proposal to use the former Colby School site as a bed-and-breakfast must be allowed to proceed and that the county’s denial was not supported by its own code.
The former Colby School, a stately Victorian-style mansion just east of S.R. 224 that has sat empty for years, is up for sale, the owners’ latest attempt to capitalize on their investment even as their last-ditch effort to salvage a planned bed-and-breakfast is working its way through district court.
The property is listed for $5.5 million, according to listing agent John Travis, and the owners have issued a call for offers due Monday. Travis said he has seen strong interest in the property, which encompasses the home, outbuildings and 5 acres of land just east of S.R. 224 near the entrance to the Canyons Village base area of Park City Mountain Resort.

Summit County Councilor Kim Carson’s days have been peppered with unusual scenes in recent years, she said, from driving a rodeo queen around before the annual demolition derby at the Summit County Fair to trying her hand at cutting a car apart while training with the Park City Fire Department.
Carson’s tenure as a Summit County councilor ends this year after two terms on the county’s highest legislative body, but she said in a recent interview her service has brought some lifelong memories.
Carson was lauded by her colleagues and county staff in the final council meetings of the year, with many complimenting her strength of character in equal measure to her preparedness and competence.
