Cal Athletics introduces GOLDEN program for student-athletes

This past week, the NCAA rolled out a new NIL package for student-athletes. These three letters represent the athlete’s name, image and likeness and will give athletes the opportunity to build their own personal brand.
This is a radical change in policy for the NCAA, which has long held that “amateurism” is part of what makes college athletics special. This stance has long prevented athletes from gaining any sort of income from their athletic endeavors, while both the NCAA and its institutions were allowed to profit off of talented players who drew fans into stadiums.

Mackenzie Ruppe
Year: Freshman
Coach’s comment: The Bearcat Girl’s swim athlete of the week is Mackenzie Ruppe. As a freshman at her first league championship on Thursday, she set two new school records! As the breaststroke leg in the 200 Medley Relay (1:53.09) from 2019. Individually she broke the 100 Breastroke record (1:09.38) from 1996! An amazing day in Arroyo Grande for an outstanding freshman.

Year: Sophomore
Coach’s comment: Justin has done an exceptional job this swim season. He broke the 5-minute barrier in the 500 freestyle at the CCAA League meet and secured a second-place finish in that event. He also finished 6th in the 200 Freestyle. Justin is the only Paso boy to have earned a CIF automatic qualifying time for the 2020-2021 school year.

Coach’s comment: Tre Eade, a co-captain of the swim team, led the team with a first-place finish in the 100 Backstroke, and a 1st place finishes with his teammates (Reily Lowry, Cody Domingos, and Nolan Rumph) in the 200 Free Relay. Tre also led the team with the fastest split in the 400 Free relay with a time of 52.86. –

Coach’s comment: Sage Adams is a senior and after having only one chance to compete her junior year she had patiently and enthusiastically waited for her next opportunity to compete. That day finally came Monday, April 17, competing at Santa Ynez High School. She showed she was ready to rise to the challenges of the times. She performed a 6 dive list receiving 8, 8, 7.5 scores on her first dive, a forward 1-1/2 somersault. With a brand new dive for Sage, back 1 somersault 1-1/2 twist, she put up scores of 7.5, 7, 6. Four Nittany Lion Wrestling Club athletes will head to Tokyo this summer to represent Team USA.
Former Penn State wrestling great David Taylor became the newest member of the Nittany Lions’ Olympian club Saturday. He’ll join Kyle Snyder, Thomas Gilman, and Helen Maroulis on the Olympic team.
Nick Lee and Jason Nolf also battled back to win third place and earn spots on the U.S. National Team.
How It Happened
Thomas Gilman kicked off the Olympic Trial finals for the NLWC with a fall in the second period over Vito Arujau at 57 kg. Gilman found himself trailing 4-0 early but quickly bounced back and went on to score the next 11 points in the match. In the second period, Gilman got Arujau on his back and managed to get the pin and take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
