In giving an alumnus’s perspective at various Temple University recruitment events, I have proudly related to prospective students and their parents examples of Temple University’s often “behind the scenes” connection to diverse events and institutions, including but not limited to the Philadelphia Zoo, the United States Congress, the National Bureau of Investigation of India, and the Department of Accounting & Information Systems at Queens College CUNY (where I taught Business Law courses and Taxation courses for more than twenty years).

Ari Kaplan recently spoke with Jim Leipold, the executive director of the National Association for Law Placement an organization focused on career counseling and planning; recruitment and retention; and the professional development of law students, lawyers and its members. Ari Kaplan: Tell us about your background and your role at NALP. Jim Leipold: I grew up overseas, went to an international high school, and returned to the U.S. for college. Afterward, I taught English in a rural Alaskan indigenous community. I moved to the University of Vermont for an undergraduate admissions position, which was my first introduction to higher education administrative management. The firm Walden co-founded in 2015 is expanding in Philadelphia. After graduating from Temple Law School in the early 1990s, friends Jim Walden and Dan Miller followed separate career paths while keeping up joint family vacations at the Shore. Walden made a name for himself prosecuting mob cases out of New York, and in 2015 co-founded a boutique law firm, Walden Macht & Haran, in Manhattan. Miller worked for the Delaware Attorney General’s office, then took his expertise handling whistleblower cases into private practice at Berger Montague.
