Twelve teachers from across the state were named Thursday as regional finalists for the 2022 Arkansas Teacher of the Year honors. The 12 will be recognized Aug. 5 at the Governor’s Mansion, where four state semifinalists will be announced. One will be named 2022 Arkansas Teacher of the Year in the fall and compete for 2022 National Teacher of the Year. Each regional finalist receives a certificate and a $1,000 prize provided by the Walton Family Foundation. The regional finalists, the subject areas or grades they teach, their schools and their school districts are:

Fort Smith Southside High School principal resigns to be with family

The principal of Southside High School is resigning to move closer to family. Lisa Miller is retiring after 18 years with the Fort Smith School District. Miller’s resignation was approved by the Fort Smith Board of Education on Monday afternoon in a regularly scheduled meeting.  “The time I have spent at Southside High School has been the most rewarding of my career,” Miller said in a press release. “The students, teachers, colleagues and friends I have met along this journey have impacted my life in more ways that I can express. I will always be proud of my time as a Southside Maverick and a part of the Fort Smith Public Schools.”
