STEUBENVILLE The Ohio Department of Transportation and Tourism Ohio figure a leisurely drive on one of the Buckeye State’s 27 scenic byways could be the perfect getaway for Ohioans anxious for a change of scenery.
May is “Drive Ohio Byways Month,” and Judy Bratten, assistant director of Historic Fort Steuben and the Visitor Center, points out Steubenville is situated along the longest byway in Ohio.

Steubenville’s nutcrackers head back to their summer home on Sunday. Volunteers loaded the 175 life-sized figures onto a truck for the short ride home. Nutcracker creator Mark Nelson said he was happy with the turnout, saying he’d seen a lot of families walking the nutcracker route this year. Historic Fort Steuben President Jerry Barilla said they counted just under 10,000 visitors this holiday season, about one-third of what they had last year. In light of the ongoing pandemic, “We’re appreciative of those who attended,” Barilla said, adding it was “successful and we’re pleased.” (Photo by Linda Harris)
