Fort Frances Mayor June Caul announced the Moffat Family Fund recipients last week during the Committee of the Whole meeting.
The fund, organized and given by the Winnipeg Foundation, allocated $93,750 to organizations in the community with the aim of supporting and advancing the economic, social, physical and intellectual well-being of children and families in the community.
The first recipient is KidSport Fort Frances, an organization that Caul said receives 100 applications per year from low income families requesting financial support to help with the cost of sport registration and equipment. KidSport Fort Frances is one of the 166 community chapters across Canada, Caul said.

The kids’ garden plots are back at the Fort Frances Community Garden.
After a one-year hiatus, due to fluctuating COVID restrictions around community gardens, plots are now being reopened to children, who are interested in managing their own plot.
The cost is $15 for a a 10-by-10 plot. All seeds and plants are provided.
The start date is May 31, but registrants will receive a map to their plot, and all the information they need to succeed, before planting is set to begin.
Gardeners will be responsible for following the garden rules and taking care of their plot.
