8 best Houston plays and performances to stream and catch in March Dixie s back and bringing the party virtually to the Hobby Center.
Photo by Matthew Tippins We’ve got a live one this month. Live, in-person, outdoor theater that is, thanks to Society for the Performing Arts. For some of our other favorite theater companies the drama, comedy, and music keeps on streaming on in March with lots of variety for the choosiest at-home audiences. As a bonus, look for some February postponed shows to spring up this month now that our long winter drama is over.

1. Chang-rae Lee
Novels by Chang-rae Lee require some patience: The new “My Year Abroad” is his first in seven years. But they’re constructed with such care that they always make the wait worthwhile. His latest focuses on a college dropout, Tiller Bardmon, on an overseas adventure, a “twelve and one-half percent Asian” visiting Asia on a wild, life-changing adventure guided by his mentor, a Chinese-American entrepreneur. He’s joined by Lily King, author of “Writers & Lovers” for a virtual reading and discussion.

A.D. Players at The George Theater announced in January that they were going virtual for the rest of their season and the move to cyberspace begins this Friday, February 12, with
A Speck-Tacular Evening of Stories and Songs with Emily & Jake Speck. You can join A.D. Players Executive Director Jake Speck and his wife Emily Tello Speck to hear their story, from finding each other to finding their place here in Houston, and to enjoy some familiar musical theater tunes. (Take a sneak peek at Emily rehearsing Sara Bareilles’s “She Used to Be Mine” from
Waitresshere). You can purchase a ticket for $35 here, and the show will be available to stream through February 28.
Giving Voice
If youâre more of an audiophile type, we have you covered. Houston Grand Opera is streaming a live performance of
Giving Voice: Lawrence Brownlee and Friends Sing Opera, Gospel, and Standards Friday night. The group, spearheaded by tenor Lawrence Brownlee, is an all-Black singing group composed of HGO alumna, HGO studio artists, and other artists who embrace the importance of celebrating diverse voices. In case you didnât know,
Giving Voice sold out at Wortham Theater last year, so this free event is kind of a big deal. However, if you are unable to watch the live performance Friday, on-demand viewings of the performance are available on HGOâs website through February 21.

One of the benefits of streaming theater â come on, we must think of that glass as half-full â is that we can now mix and match offerings within a single evening. You can start with a short from London and pair it with a concert from Chicago. Or you can have a full meal of show tunes by sticking around the Pasadena Playhouseâs website.
